How to Plan a Brand Interview Shoot Around the Story

Plan a commercial interview from the message backwards: define the audience, evidence, question path, visual support and edit decisions before filming.

Write the story objective first

Decide what the viewer should understand or feel after the piece. A founder story, customer proof, expert explanation and employer-brand film need different questions and different evidence. Write one sentence that the final edit must communicate.

Choose contributors by what they can prove

Select each person for a specific part of the story. A senior title alone does not guarantee a useful interview. Ask what experience, detail or example only that contributor can provide, and avoid assigning the same message to everyone.

Build a question path, not a script

Move from context to experience, evidence, consequence and reflection. Use open questions that invite complete answers. Prepare follow-ups for vague claims and technical language. If exact legal or product wording is required, separate it from the conversational interview.

Plan visual evidence beside the answers

For each story point, list useful supporting images: process, product, environment, archive, team activity or demonstration. This gives the edit more than talking heads and helps the final film show what the speaker describes.

Design for the final formats

State whether the production needs a long film, short paid edits, vertical clips, pull quotes or still portraits. Framing, eyeline, pauses and question coverage should support those outputs from the start.
